Greetings from Chair

Are You Still Studying the Humanities in an Era of “Sorry for Being a Humanities Major”?

“A science and technology-focused university has a School in the humanities and social sciences? Why are they necessary? What do you even do there as a faculty member?”

I am often asked these questions. Indeed, we live in a remarkable age of science and technology. Many high school students aspire to study at science and technology-focused universities like GIST, pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in these fields. Over time, they come to see science and technology not just as their career paths but as lenses through which they understand humanity, society, and the world.

Yet, as science and technology continue to advance, we are confronted with deeper, more fundamental questions: What is the essence of humanity? Where are society and the world headed? Are we on the right track?

To explore such questions, we need analytical thinking, critical reasoning, and practical problem-solving skills—abilities that originate from the humanities and social sciences. This is precisely why the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at GIST exists. We do not simply promote vague ideals of fostering “integrated talents” or “creative leaders.” Instead, we aim to help students move beyond a purely scientific and technological education, encouraging them to engage in deeper intellectual and practical explorations of themselves and the world. We would express this mission as cultivating “critical thinking skills” and a “spirit of challenge in solving real-world problems.”

Furthermore, we emphasize an “open mindset and attitude” as a core value. Nothing—not even science and technology—should be regarded as absolute truth or beyond question. Everything must be continuously re-examined through reflection and introspection. This approach embodies the essence of the humanities, the analytical perspective of the social sciences, and, at the same time, the core philosophy of our School.

To achieve these goals, our School offers a unique curriculum that transcends traditional academic boundaries between the humanities, social sciences, and science and technology. With GIST’s world-class educational environment and tailored system, we support students in exploring new possibilities and pursuing their ambitions.

We invite you to join us on this journey of intellectual challenge and discovery. We welcome your interest and support, and we encourage you to fully explore your dreams and potential within our School. We, too, will continue to push boundaries and strive for growth.

Thank you.

Gunoo Kim, Chair of School of Humanities and Social Sciences, GIST
